HILL COUNTRY STARRY NIGHT was created by Joe David, Jez, and Cleo with guardian Gay Gaddis. While their Gay painted the background, all three dogs sat beside her waiting eagerly for their turn at the canvas. Joe David used his tail as a brush, while Jez and Cleo put paint on their feet and walked on the canvas. They all chose to use their claws to create scratch effects. All the dogs were rescued from life on the street. Jez and Cleo where found at Gay’s office in downtown Austin, and Joe David was found standing by a low water crossing near Gay’s ranch. Gay said “since we already had four dogs, I knew I had to make my husband laugh so he would want to keep him - so I named him after our banker”. All the dogs have had life-threatening problems: Joe David is beautifully recovered from having his leg amputated due to bone cancer. Jez is now in remission for lymphoma, and Cleo has badly healed wounds from being hit by a car prior to being found by Gay. When not painting, the dogs enjoy running and playing at the ranch, chasing lizards, sunning on the deck ,and eating cooked chicken. They are loyal, protective, and like “helping out in the kitchen.”
